The pensioners' movement in State Bank of India took shape due to the initiative taken by a few IBI pensioners. The first voice was raised by the late Shri M Budhraja of Mumbai in 1967. He sought the revision of the meager pension paid to him by our Bank. Though all the pensioners were affected for many years by the very low pension paid by our Bank, only a few pensioners like the late Shri M Budhraja sought justice from our Bank. He also made an effort to form an Association of SBI pensioners in Bombay in the year 1972. As there was not much support, he could not pursue his efforts. He finally settled down in Delhi and passed away.
In the year 1973, under the leadership of Shri C B Bankley and Shri V D Mehta, an Association of SBI pensioners was formed in Ahmedabad. Thereafter in 1974, N L Pabalkar together with Shri R M Bajwala and Late Shri R Y Kaul from Pune took the initiative to form an Association in Pune. An informal meeting of 21 pensioners was held in Pune on 17/02/1974. Thereafter on 19/09/1974 State Bank of India Pensioners Association, Pune was formed with the late Shri N L Pabalkar as the first President. In the year 1979, the name of State Bank of India Pensioners' Association, Pune was changed to State Bank of India Pensioners' Association (BombayCircle) Pune.
In the year 1984, late Shri. LN Pabakar initiated the idea of forming a separate Association in the South with Madras as its Head Quarters. Shri. D Ranganathan our founder Secretary joined the Pune Association in 1982 on his retirement from his service. On 15-02-1984 Bombay Circle Association celebrated its decade of service with 100 Members from all over the country participating. A large number of pensioners from our circle also joined this Association and continued to remain its members till our Association was started in 1984. The membership started growing fast from the year 1989. The Family Pensioners were enrolled as members.
Under the guidance and financial support of State Bank of India Pensioners Association (Bombay Circle) a formal meeting of about 50 Pensioners was held on 24-03-1984 at SBIOA Institute for Trade Union, Education and Research, Madras-1. The Committee formed then for framing the Constitution finalised it after its meetings on 28-03-1984 and 2-04-1984.
At the meeting held on 15-04-1984 Sarva Shri P.S. Santhanakrishnan, A.M.Mariappan and N.D. Ranganathan were elected as President, Vice-President and Secretary respectively. Our Association was inaugurated on 20-06-1984 by Shri K.D. Nayyar then Chief General Manager (Madras Circle) at Hotel Dasaprakash. Shri. P. Shanmugasundaram, President SBIOA (Madras Circle) and Shri V. Ganesan, General Secretary SBSU (Madras Circle) offered their felicitations with Shri.
